What is a virtual school and is it right for me?

Our virtual school provides flexible, learner-centered instruction to students who experience barriers of time and place with traditional course offerings. It uses various forms of technology, including computers and the Internet to bring the course content, instructors and students together.

Only you can decide if our virtual school is right for you or your child. Students who are successful in our virtual school are highly motivated and possess above average time management skills.

How does an online course work? Do I work at my own pace?

State-certified instructors guide Virtual High School students through their courses. At any hour of the day, active students open the http://www.pin-ed.com website, log into the class, receive instruction, take quizzes and exams, and submit work to be graded. Teachers evaluate student work and send back grades and comments. Many students report having more contact with their online instructor than they experience in a traditional school setting.

How do I know if I am eligible for this program?

According to the Arizona Revised Statutes, all students are not eligible to participate in a distance education instructional program. In order to participate in the Pinnacle Virtual High School, students must meet specific eligibility criteria and parents must agree to verify and submit documentation supporting the time spent by the student on academic tasks.

Eligibility criteria includes:

  • A pupil is not eligible to participate in the program unless the pupil was previously enrolled in and attended a public school in the previous school year, except that a kindergarten pupil may participate in the program if the pupil has a sibling who is currently enrolled in and attending the program.
  • Parents must agree to assure that the enrolling student will complete no less than twenty (20) hours of work per week, on all assigned academic tasks, and that failure to complete the minimum hours required each week will result in the student being withdrawn from the Pinnacle Virtual High School.
  • Pupils who participate in the program are subject to the testing requirements prescribed in Chapter 7, Article 3 of Title 15. This includes the requirement that the student attend a pre-determined location, of the school's choosing, at which the student will take the Stanford 9 and AIMS test as required.
  • Parents have the right to choose educational options such as Pinnacle Virtual High School for their children. A student's full-time school may not deny access to courses offered by Pinnacle assuming that the desired online course(s) is an appropriate course placement based on the student's academic history, grade level, and age.

I am an AOL user. What adjustments will I need to make for the virtual school?

You may need to adjust your AOL settings before registering and taking our virtual school courses. All parental controls must be set to 18 and over for all users and functions on your machine. After you connect to the Internet, minimize the AOL window before launching Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher to access our site. The AOL browser will not work.
Because of the browsing capabilities used by American Online, we suggest that you do not use AOL's browser for logging in to our courses. The simplest work around is to log in to your AOL account, and then use Internet Explorer as your web browser.
